A few weeks ago at C's 4 month checkup her doctor said we could introduce first foods; rice cereal or oatmeal, from now through six months. The hubby and I both noticed that Princess C was working really hard on strengthening her neck muscles, (she's a Tummy Time champ) and when she sits in her high chair at the dinner table with us she is super interested in what we are doing. At 4 and half months we decided we were ready to at least see what she did.
We went with a rice cereal, no added flavor of banana or any other fruits for fear of introducing too many new things at once. We chose Gerber as our brand because they have established themselves as the go-to baby food brand. Since this was the first time we purchased any product like this I figured it was safe to go with the brand we recognized. What I wasn't expecting were so many options once we decided to go with rice cereal. Single grain, whole wheat, organic, we didn't know which one to select!
Since this was going to be her first introduction to anything other than breastmilk or formula we went with the single grain. We also purchased a container of the whole wheat to introduce once the single grain seems to have been digested easily.
How did she do? At first she didn't fully grasp the concept of taking food off of the spoon, she knew to open her mouth when we presented it to her but her tongue wasn't really cooperating. After the third spoonful though she was a pro! I will continue offering the cereal once a day, mixing only a tablespoon with 3 to tablespoons of formula. I can't believe we have an eater already! Where has the time gone?
