A Sleeping Beauty Engagement Party

4/9/2018

My husband and I got engaged on Valentine's Day back in 2015. After going over different schedules we decided to set our wedding date for July 16, 2016, leaving us plenty of time to plan our big day. I'll post about our wedding soon but for now I want to focus on our engagement party because as you'll learn our engagement party and wedding shared a themed; Sleeping Beauty. The engagement party would focus on the first half of the tale when Aurora (Briar Rose) was in the woods and then the wedding would feel like a royal affair.

The Color Scheme

The theme of the party was based off of Sleeping Beauty living in the woods, what does she wear when in the woods? Her grey and purple dress. Purple was the color of choice for this party and while decorations would be kept to a minimum; the purple would come into play from the napkins at each place setting, the flower arrangements, the cake and our choice of outfits. I wore a purple dress, my hubby (future hubby at the time) wore a grey suit with a purple shirt and pocket square.

The Flower Arrangements

Aside from a few other special touches that I'll talk about later, the flowers were really the only decorations we had for our party. We had two flower arrangements a shorter one for tables near the front featuring hydrangeas and orchids and a taller one for the tables in the back that had long branches to tie in the "woodland" theme and orchids.

The "Woodland" Touches

As mentioned before the underlining theme of our engagement party was the woodland  to reflect the period of Briar Rose living in the woods prior to realizing she is indeed Princess Aurora. So I wanted to incorporate a few "woodland" features. For one, our table numbers were actually pieces of real bark that I found from a shop on Etsy. The numbers were vinyl and through the mystique of magic, were put on the wood. I think I've mentioned before I'm not a DIY type of person so how the numbers got on the wood doesn't matter to me all I cared about what how good it looked on my tables.

Other features made from real wood were our escort card holders, there were literally pieces of wood that with slices in them to stick cards in and a beautiful, hand-made sign featuring the famous lyric "I walked with you once upon a dream".

Another "woodland" feature we had but was not quite real (okay, it wasn't real at all) was our wish tree! I found this on Etsy as well and I was in love with it the moment I saw it. The tree came with Swarovski crystal charms and the idea was that when a guest came over to the tree they would write a special message for the "future Mr. & Mrs" on a card and then place their wish on the tree and take off a charm.

The Cake

There weren't too many overtly Sleeping Beauty themed items at the party but the most obvious one was our cake topper. Once again purchased off Etsy, seriously this party should have been sponsored by the site, the super light-weight cake topper was the perfect finishing touch.

This wraps up part one of our Sleeping Beauty themed nuptials, I will share pictures from our wedding day soon!
