Dragons: The Nine Realms | Interview with Marcus Scribner and John Tellegen
It's the modern day and dragons are just a legend, or are they? This is exactly what gets explored in the new series coming to Hulu and Peacock on December 23rd, DreamWorks Dragons: The Nine Realms is set more than 1,000 years AFTER the events of "How to Train Your Dragon" bringing with it fresh characters, new storylines, updated coloring and animation style and of course, dragons.
Creating something new based off of something *old* and beloved can be challenging and while it is important for franchises to grow and evolve in order to keep the story going, it is also important for creators to keep the source material in mind and give fans little nuggets or callbacks to what they know and love. During the conversation about "The Nine Realms", executive producer John Tellegen said as much when I asked him about the coloring used on our new dragon (no-spoilers on name from me!) as I can see a bit of a tie in to both Toothless and Light Fury, and John said "you look for ways to make a new iteration feel familiar and feel like it is cut from the same cloth as the previous so it doesn't feel like a complete departure". We also learned that "The Nine Realms" and the "How to Train Your Dragon" series does take place in the same universe. Viewers will have to watch the series to see how these stories are connected! The Machines | Roundtable Cast Interview "We wanted to maintain the heart and soul of the franchise, For his part, John says he understands why fans of the movies may be apprehensive about a new series bringing dragons into the modern world but says, "I hope they (legacy fans) know that I love the franchise as much as they do". Dragons: The Nine Realms | Full InterviewWhen asked what he was most excited about, Marcus Scribner says that "one of the things that our show does best is displaying a sense of adventure" and "I'm excited for the audience to join us on this adventure". Marcus also mentioned that viewers would learn more about the lore of the dragons through this new series. "I'm excited for everybody to see all of the different kinds of Throughout the interview it became clear that Marcus loves dragons! When I asked if he would be ready to hop on a dragon's back and take flight (if we lived in a world with dragons) he was quick to say that he would "fullsend it immediately!" In envisioning what a world would be like with dragons, Marcus likened dragons to dogs saying"it is less like an ownership thing but more of a mutual bond" and that dragons would be our friends for life!
