Rugrats: Season 1, Volume 1 | Review

Rugrats (2021) is a new take on the babies 90's kids grew up with.

As expected, references made in the new series reflect the current times; live streaming, asking to be tagged, dating apps and so forth. Some things are similar though, the new series follows suit with the original and uses lots of potty humor for laughs. 

The CGI animation of the new series is in line with children's shows of recent years and the animation is very colorful and bright.

Just like the original format, Rugrats (2021) houses two stories in one 30 (ish) minute block, aside from the first episode in the reboot titled, "Second Time Around".

At the heart of the series is Tommy and his imagination. He is a doer, he is determined, nothing is "imposterable", impossible ;) 

Some slight changes to note: Grandpa Lou does yoga and is all about peace and love (quite a departure from his original character). Another change? Phil and Lil's dad, Howard, is nowhere to be found. Their mom, Betty is now a single mom and at one point mentions an ex-girlfriend. Viewers will not have to wait to "meet the Carmichaels" as Susie is in the first episode!

Perhaps the best part of the this series is the cast! Yep, there are some recognizable names here! For starters, original cast members for the voices of Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica, Susie, Phil and Lil are all back AND then there is addition of Michael McKean, Nicole Byer, and Tony Hale!

Rugrats (2021) is just enough nostalgia and just enough new to give parents and kids something to enjoy!
