Taking a Play from the Kardashian Playbook Sharing Your Peak and Pit

It is no secret that I am a fan of the Kardashians. I enjoy their show (and all of the spin offs) and I really admire how close of a family they seem to be despite their fame, fortune (and drama). Now, I'm no Kris Jenner, if I look one third of as good as she looks over 60 I'll be happy, but one tradition she's instilled in her kids is something I plan on doing with mine. Sharing your "peak and pit" at the end of every family vacation. If I really get it together, this is an exercise I would strive to do each night at dinner as well as a way to open up communication between my children and I.

Sharing Your Peak and Pit

The Kardashians don't take typical family vacations, they may go to destinations you've heard of or have even been to but they are not staying in your run of the mill hotels.

No matter where they venture; Thailand, Greece, the Dominican Republic, (or even Montana), it is inevitable at that end of the their trip (and the end of the vacation episode) as they are sitting down for their final meal, someone will ask everyone to share their "peak and pit" of the trip.

Then one by one everyone will say what their best and worst moment was during the vacation.

I think this tradition is wonderful.

How Sharing Peaks and Pits Can Help

This honest conversation shows that no matter who you are, no matter how famous you may be, sometimes things go wrong on a vacation.

No amount of money spent on a trip can save everyone from aggravation or annoyance and that's okay.

To me, this just further solidifies how relatable the Kar-Jenner clan can be.

We all might have a moment or two while on vacation where things don't go as planned and it gets frustrating and sharing the "peak and pit" allows each family member to say "hey this part wasn't fun for me" and then they also get to share what their favorite part was too.

There's nothing wrong with calling out something that went wrong just as long as you can call out something that went right.

These peaks and pits can help when it comes time to plan the next vacation and it can help in the short term too if a pit for someone directly involves a family member and how they were treated or spoken to. Sometimes we do not realize how much an attitude or off-hand comment can affect a person until they tell us.

Sharing Peaks and Pits Daily

During one episode, Kourtney Kardashian explained that discussing each family member's "peak and pit" started off as something they discussed every evening at dinner when they were kids.

This is a great exercise for school-aged children because doing this each night will make them think of something to say, no one can answer this question with "nothing".

A plus to asking for the "peak and pit" is that it isn't a yes or not question.

When asked to share a "peak and a pit" it will make kids recall at least two things that happened in school; for better or worse. Having conversations like this are important and it allows for each kid to have the spotlight at dinner and feel like they are being heard.

I plan on sharing the "peak and pit" of the trip or of a particular day too, this will show my kids that even adults get down sometimes and that's okay.

We just always have to remember no matter how many "pits" there may be, there are also "peaks" too.
