Yarn Wrapped Number 1

Here we go again! I'm planning another party which means I need more decoration ideas which leads to more pins to my pin board and of course, more DIY attempts by your's truly. This time I wrapped a cardboard number 1 in yarn. Easy right? We'll see about that!

Yarn Wrapped 1: What You'll Need

Yarn Wrapped 1 Supplies
Your number (or letter)
Crafter's Glue
Yarn
Optional: Ribbon
Optional: Decorative flowers or other decorations

Luckily this project doesn't require a lot of supplies however the most important part is finding a number that is thick enough and sturdy enough to stand on it's own.

I found a cardboard number 1, 16 inches tall from Hobby Lobby that worked perfectly!

Yarn Wrapped 1: What To Do

I started at the base of the 1 and wrapped the yarn around it in one long strand. Tip: Don't mess with the bottom of the number, you want that to remain as sturdy as possible and putting yarn on that part might cause it to no longer be able to stand on it's own.

Once I got to the steam of the 1, I cut my yarn and then made individual strands to glue on top of the base.

Wrapping the steam of the 1 was easy and I kept my yarn intact all the way until I reached the top. Then again I cut small strands to place on the parts that could not be wrapped continuously. Even going as far to attach yarn strands to the under side; I flipped the 1 upside down to accomplish that.

Once the entire number was wrapped I criss-crossed ribbon down the steam.

To further decorate I added large flowers.

Yarn Wrapped 1: Learn From My Mistakes

Nothing is ever as easy as it seems. If I could go back and do it again I would do a few things differently.

First, I would paint the cardboard number white (or yellow since that was the color of yarn I was using) to avoid spots of cardboard showing through. It became tricky trying to cut small pieces of yarn and gluing them in spots where cardboard was exposed due to my wrapping not being entirely straight.

Second, I might try to use a paint brush to help spread the glue around, I did start to feel like I was using too much glue but since the glue I purchased dried white I just kept going.
