A plate craft I created with my toddler was this Oscar the Grouch Mask. Here we used paint (so there was no way around the mess) but she had a blast using both a paint brush and her hands to paint the plate green. She was a more willing participant to allow me to paint her hand and make prints on the paper. From there I did my best trying to create Cookie's eyes out of construction paper.
